Who Picked My Produce

Last week I did something I never thought I'd do.  I never understood why anyone would need to.  But there I was, sitting at home at 10 pm Sunday night and there was no food in the house.  So I broke down and went grocery shopping... online.

New Yorkers do this all the time.  I learned about Fresh Direct when I moved here.  For people who don't live a block from a grocery store or refuse to buy one of those wire carts it's actually a great solution.  I admit I was skeptical.  How do I trust someone else to pick out my produce?!

But I had a coupon and it was late, so I figured there was never a better time to dip my toe into the brave new world of online grocery shopping.

It was easier then I expected.  That might partly be because I'm boring and always get the same foods.  But Fresh Direct also happens to have a large selection of organic dairy, meats and produce, as well as some prepared meals and meal kits.  I didn't try out any of the meals, but appreciated the organic choices.   I think the organic stuff is especially important for the fruits and veggies we juice.  They also had grass fed ground beef and pork raised without antibodies.  Happy words to me!

My order was probably 70% produce, 20% dairy, and 10% meat.  I'd say I was totally satisfied with all the dairy and meat.  The produce was mostly great.  Apples and kale were delicious and crisp.   Peaches and pears ripened up nicely.  Out of all the produce, only the basil was disappointing.  I basically threw it out because it had black spots on all the leaves.  Still have no clue if that is normal.

But by far the best part of the whole experience were the 2 boxes that arrived at our door the next day.  I LOVE delivery.  It's like Christmas.  And getting your groceries in a box is totally fun.

As happy as I was with everything, there's still something nice about picking out your own tomatoes.  And since I can walk to a Whole Foods who will also deliver to my apartment same day, Fresh Direct will remain a back up choice for the Knight household.

At least until the next Sunday night I'm sitting on my bed hungry.
