It is the Hamptons Afterall

That's what we kept telling each other 2 weekends ago during our day trip to Coopers Beach at South Hampton.  It's a good thing to remember when you see a woman in a bikini and high heels at the food stand or beach rentals listed for 280K a month in the town square.

Mandy, Tamara, her husband Michele, and I rented a Zip car and drove the hour and half out to the beach last Saturday.   It was fun going on a mini road road trip again.  Reminded me of all the day trips I used to take from Richmond the last few years - to Charlottesville, DC, VA beach, IKEA...

M and T had been to this beach before, so they led the way.  It's a good choice if you don't want a beach overflowing with people because it's not near a train or bus stop.  You have to drive to get there.  A total NY way of thinking.

It was more crowded then I expected at first, especially with the $40 fee to park in this small lot that seems off the main roads.  There was a small restaurant (more like a beach grill where you can get a sandwich) and public baths.  It really wasn't fancy, but it was very beachy and cute.  People were setting up their tents and blankets right next to each other, but we walked down a bit until there was plenty of room.

It was a great beach.  The sand was grainier then I expected, more like pacific beaches then south carolina.  It was hot and humid so the cold water felt wonderful.  Right behind our camp was a sprawling modern home with 2 guest houses.  The 3 girls took a long walk east.  We ran into a country club full of beautiful Hampton people.

Later Mandy and I ate at the grill.  After eating we were in line for the bathroom when one of the beautiful Hampton moms came out of a the stall with a  naked 3 or 4 year old little blond girl.  She looked around, flustered and unsure of what to do.  Exasperated she started to pull the girl - still stark naked - out the door.  The whole line of women must have had quite an expression on our faces because she looked up at us with pleading eyes and said, "She pooped in her suit.   I don't know what to do.  Can I take her outside like this?  Is it ok??"  What do you say to that!  We all just nodded and I said "Sure, what else can you do?"  The Hamptons mom looked at me gratefully and continued out.  Her little naked girl looked straight at me, smiled, and said "thank you."  Oblivious to her mom's embarrassment.  The whole thing still makes me laugh.  Even Hampton moms have kids that poop their pants.

Beautiful Hampton homes.

Mandy likes pictures of people jumping.  Here we are trying to get our timing down...
Not quite.
Try again.
Yea!

Mandy slept through our Phase 10 game.

Around 4 pm we started to pack up and drove into the little downtown of South Hampton.  It was beautifully kept of course, with several nice restaurants and shops.   We found Mandy's favorite store and a namesake for Tamara.  There was also a very large home that had been turned into a library.   Michele said he wanted to have a glass of wine with his women so we stopped at one of the cute places.   After some yummy local rose and small plates of food, we started back for the city.  It really was a great day.

The drive from the beach back to the main road.  Felt like I was in Highland Park in Dallas.
