On the second day in Germany, I was still jet lagged, but managed to keep up with my folks as they led the charge to explore Garmisch. You could say we eased into Germany, since our first outing was to the PX (that the army version of Walmart for anyone not into military lingo). The hotel is actually an American hotel for our military, so it was easy to stay there and complete with American restaurants for anyone who got sick of schnitzel. The food and service wasn't great, so we tried not to eat there. But there were lots of other great amenities.
Trey's college roommate, Frank, and his wife, Katie, drove down to see us. Frank's currently stationed in Germany, so Trey doesn't get a lot of quality time with his former roomie. We took advantage of their car and drove to outskirts of the town for a hike to a war memorial. The place was surrounded by sheep and everything was green and beautiful.
After a lovely scroll back down the mountain, we walked through the town until we got to the main square. Then we all enjoyed German beer and food. It was a pretty great first full day in Bavaria.
Ready, set, hike!
Mom led the way, map in hand. Trey made sure we enjoyed the walk. We might have been passed by a few Germans with their metal hiking sticks.
Go, go E!
View of the war memorial from the hiking trail. Totally picturesque.
Katie points the way for Trey.
The hills were alive - with sheep.
View of Garmisch-Partenkirchen from the War Memorial.
Most of the sheep kept to themselves, but this black one was all about the people. He was excellent at posing for pictures.
Don't believe Trey's smile. He was terrified the sheep was going to eat his shirt.
Future Christmas card.
Best. Sister. Ever.
We stopped for a Heißwasser before dinner. All the locals were gathered in the town square enjoying beers and pretzels. We tried to blend in. Pretty sure it didn't work.
Not sure a daughter could admire her father anymore than I do.
Typical town houses.
Local restaurant where we enjoyed dinner on the patio. Seriously good schnitzel and red cabbage.
My new favorite beer. Don't think I've actually had a favorite beer before...
Frank, Trey, and Katie right before they hit the town.
