Rain, Beer, & Crowns

Day 4 / May 29   -   Munich

We spent our fourth day in Germany exploring Munich.  It was cold and rainy, but I'm really glad we got to spend time in the city.  Our tour guide took us around for bit.  At one point we all huddled under a bakery awning as it poured like we were in a rain forest.  We saw the main outdoor market, a couple beautiful churches, and the famous clock.  My favorite was lunch at the Hofbrauhaus though.  I don't care if it is a tourist stop - the food was great and my feet were dry.

After lunch we regrouped with the tour to see the Crown Jewels of Munich.  It was one of those museums with so much stuff you could spend a whole day learning about it all.  I actually think I remember the audio tour saying there was 15 hours of content.  I enjoyed seeing the old crowns and alters up close.  The best was a toiletry set for two given to Napoleon as a wedding gift.  It was a small trunk with exact spaces carved out for everything from a bowl and pitcher set to a toothbrush.  Every bit of space was used perfectly.  Real German efficiency.

On the way out of town we saw a few more of the main sites from the bus.  By then we were all pretty tired and ready to see the hotel.  An hour and a half later, we did.

He wouldn't pose like the Felderrnhalle statue, but I still like the photo.

The beautiful Theatine Church of St. Cajetan.

A crowd gathers regularly to watch the Rathaus-Glockenspiel (giant coo coo clock) in Marienplatz, the main square in Munich.  We were no exception.  Not even the rain would stop us!

I can feel the wind and rain all over again when I look at this image.  Daddy's umbrella went inside out on him at one point during the day, but Mom kept hers upright.
All the strawberries and asparagus (spargel) had just come into season.  There were tons of these stands in the city with just those 2 items.  I kinda love the gothic wall behind the stand.
Lunch at the Hofbrauhaus.  I got the impression this place is a tourist destination, but the food and beer was still very good.  And they had live music.
Like father, like son.
Famous beer steins in the Hofbrauhaus.  Like a gym locker for your beer mug.
We took an audio tour of the Crown Jewels.  The devices looked like cell phones from the 1980s.
This was my favorite set of jewels.  Looks like something Grace Kelly would have worn.
Back on the bus and out of the rain.
